It is nothing to be ashamed of, because it has happened to everyone that has ever picked up a golf club, even the professionals.
Some people have figured out how to stop hitting fat golf shots, while others haven’t, so we have decided to provide you with some information to help you eliminate it from your game.

What is a fat golf shot?
A fat golf shot is what occurs when you attempt to hit the ball, but you hit the ground first which results in a poor shot that hardly goes any distance follow by a large divot.
Fat golf shots are also referred to as duffed shots or scuffed shots, but as previously mentioned, it has happened to everyone that ever picked up a club.
What causes the shot?
The most common cause of a fat golf shot is the fundamentals of your golf swing, if you don’t have the proper form, the chances of you hitting a fat shot are very high.
The good news is it is something that can be easily fixed with a few tweaks of your swing.
The thing about tweaking or changing your swing is that there is no quick fix for it, you have to practice regularly to perfect the new swing, or you will still find yourself hitting those golf shots.
Here are a few reasons why your swing causes you to hit fat shots.
Your swing is too steep into the ball
One mistake a lot of people make when swinging the ball, is the fact that they have a steep swing.
This is also the reason they slice the ball a lot. The reason that their swing is so steep, is because their angle of approach is way too sharp.
If you find yourself doing this, it means that you are tilting your shoulders too much, instead of just turning them.
To hit the ball properly, your golf swing should turn around the body, not make you move in an awkward up and down motion.
You should try and make sure that your shoulders are level before swinging at the ball to avoid a steep swing that will likely result in a fat shot.
Leaving weight on your back foot
If you have ever had a lesson on how to properly swing your golf club, you should know that swinging the club properly requires you to transfer weight from your right side to your left side (right hander).
If your weight is on one side during your backswing and remains on the same side during your downswing, the chances of you hitting a fat shot are very high.
When you are swinging the club, it is important that you move your weight to the opposite side when you are on your downswing.
Having too much weight on one side causes the body to twist like a bow and makes it difficult to get the lateral movement you need to hit the ball properly.
Having the ball to close or too far
When attempting to hit a shot, it is important that you have the right posture. Having the right posture allows you to hit the ball very well, which is the whole point.
If the ball is too close to you, or too far from you, you are likely to hit a fat golf shot.
Now that we have covered some of the reasons people hit fat golf shots, it is time to look at some of the things that you can do to eliminate the fat shots from your game.
These pointers are basically the fundamentals that everyone that plays golf should know, and if you can make the adjustments, you will notice the improvement in your swing.

Make sure you have the right posture
When it comes to golf posture is very important, because it affects how you hit the ball.
Before you swing your club, make sure that you have the right posture, which means that your chin should be up and your head should be away from your chest.
This will make it easier for you to swing through and hit the ball very well.
When you are getting ready to hit the ball, make sure you are leaning forward and your body is about 20 degrees from your hips.
You should also make sure that you aren’t dipping your body because low posture can lead to fat golf shots.
Once you have your body in the right position, you can do a few practice swings without hitting the ball.
This will help you make sure that you don’t hit the ground before you make contact with the ball.
Properly transfer your weight
As previously mentioned, weight transference during your swing makes a big difference when it comes to how well you hit the ball.
This is why you need to learn how to properly transfer your weight when you swing the ball.
For right handed golfers on your backswing, your weight will move to your right side, so on your downswing, you have to shift it to your left.
For left handed golfers, it should be the other way around. The most important thing in this situation, is to make sure that 80 percent of your weight should be on the front foot as you hit the ball.
Make sure your swing plane is not too steep or shallow
We stated earlier that hitting the ball steeply will result in a fat golf shot, which is why you should try to flatten your shoulder turn which will encourage a shallower plane.
If you are on too shallow a plane, you should push your club away on your backswing, that way it doesn’t come inside as much at it normally would.
This will ensure that the bottom of the swing moves forward and you strike the ball exactly where you want to.
