Choose golf instructors wisely
Golf is a great sport and when played right is one of the best experiences you will ever enjoy.
Like everything in life we want to get better at, finding a good instructor can help speed up the process and fast track your game.
However, whilst there are many great golf instructors around there are a few that can really hinder rather than help your golf game.
Tom Stickney is a golf instructor that co-created the Perfect Impact System that I use and recommend.
It's simple and easy to use golf instruction that's perfect for golfers of all levels regardless of age, ability or physical condition.
Here are 4 ways you can protect yourself from learning an incorrect golf swing and slowing down your progress of playing better golf:
1. Posture, set-up, stance, aim & alignment and grip are key
These are fundamentals of a good golf swing and need to be implemented by all golfers.
Getting a good golf posture is one of the first things you need to learn in the golf swing.
This will save time and money with the instructor so you can focus on other important elements of the golf swing.
2. Have a good knowledge of the golf swing takeaway
This is where the golf swing starts and it’s vital to get it right so the whole golf swing flows.
Just over 12 months ago I had a golf instructor tell me my too far inside takeaway was not an issue.
This was despite it causing me to come over the top in the downswing.
Tip: Have your golf swing takeaway recorded or watch yourself in a mirror so you can see exactly how it looks and whether it needs to be changed.
3. Research the one plane and two plane golf swing
This is important because not every golfer is physical able to complete either type of golf swing.
The last thing you want to be doing is being forced to perform a golf swing that is beyond your limitations.
Both of these golf swings work and are currently used by some of the best golfers in the world.
Getting the correct golf swing plane is one of the best things you can do for your golf swing.
4. Understand the top and follow through of the golf swing
The key thing here is once you know the correct positions a good golf instructor can help tweak any minor faults.
Additionally know the physical limitations of your body so you won’t get forced into position you are physically not capable of doing.
For example, some golfers can swing all the way to parallel and others only to about three quarters.
Both golf swings work but you need to know what works for you.
What you need to do next
When you understand these key points you will be in a better position to tell your golf instructor what you need to work on.
This way they will not try to have you swinging in a way that doesn’t suit or benefit your body.
Most golf instructors teach in their own style or method so it’s important to find one that fits your golf swing.
Learn as much about the golf swing as you can but importantly try to understand your own swing.
