What are your expectations?

I’m going to relate these two mental golf tips to driving accuracy off the tee which is a common problem among golfers of all levels. I bet you get really upset when you miss a fairway off the tee … right? Don’t feel bad you’re not alone!

I’ve done it, every pro you see on television has done it at some stage. It’s a common human reaction to a poor result.

But get this!

Did you know that the percentage of fairways hit on the PGA Tour for 2013 and this season just begun is between 56 – 58%?

Or to put it another way that means that the professionals are only hitting every second fairway.

What does this mean?

It means every other fairway their golf balls are landing in the rough, the water, behind trees, or maybe even out of bounds. Yes, they have their good days when the percentage is much higher but overall it’s about everyone in every two. So you may be asking how do the professionals get so good when they are missing so many fairways? Good question and I’ll answer that below.

For the time being it’s important to be aware of this statistic and adjust your mindset accordingly.

Don’t get upset, be disappointed sure but don’t let a missed fairway ruin an entire round and learn to move on.

Next time you miss a fairway remember, the pros are missing every second one to so it’s your ability to recover from these missed fairways that can enable your golf game to reach a higher level.

Practice shaping the golf ball

How do you practice when you visit your local golf driving range? Let me guess, you spend most of your time trying to bash the driver as far as you can … right? I visit my local range every week and I see over and over the same guys hitting the driver. I rarely see them hitting shorter clubs or have any purpose for their practice.

Now, following up on the first tip this is where you can really make some great improvement in your golf game.

It makes sense that if you are missing at least every second fairway that you need to spend more time on shaping the golf left to right or right to left to practice getting out of trouble and back onto the green.

Not only that, practice hitting low and high shots and even hitting out of the thick rough.

These are the type of shots you are most likely to find yourself in when you miss the fairway.

Do like the pros

2012 US Masters winner Bubba Watson is one professional I know that spends a lot of time practicing shaping the golf ball during his practice sessions. If it’s good enough for the pros then it’s definitely good enough for the rest of us!

By all means, don’t neglect to practice for accuracy and distance but ensure you do spend sufficient time on learning the art of shaping the golf ball as well as hitting it low and high.

When you become efficient at these types of shots it’s less likely that missing a fairway will bother you and you’ll be confident of getting the golf ball back onto the green and making par.
