What does the chicken wing in golf look like?

The chicken wing in golf happens through the impact zone as you make contact with the golf ball. The left and right arm bend and become disconnected from the body. For a right-handed golfer, typically there is a significant bend in the left elbow through impact and beyond.

The picture at the top shows a good example of what it looks like.

The results are poor contact with the golf ball resulting in weak blocks, slices, and a significant lack of distance.

Ideally, you want both arms to be straight right after the point of impact with full extension.

Why you suffer from the chicken wing in golf?

The chicken wing in golf is most commonly the result of golfers becoming right-side dominant (right-hander) and not utilizing the left side of their body. What I mean is during the downswing the golfer will push hard with the right shoulder, right arm, and right hand.

This causes a loss of lag angle and forces the clubhead to overtake the hands.

Finally, the left arm is pushed up and out and the elbow doesn’t get a chance to fold down and ends up pointing out to the side.


How to fix your golf chicken wing

The most efficient way to fix your chicken wing in golf is to practice swinging the golf club with the left side of your body. The golf swing is naturally a lead side dominated movement so it makes sense you need to practice it.

Because it’s usually your least used arm, it takes practice to control the movement of the getting the clubface through impact.

  • Swing with your left arm only and follow-through without hitting a golf ball.

  • After follow through let the left elbow fold over and let the clubhead fully rotate.

This means you have released properly and will avoid the golf chicken wing.
