Black Mountain Golf Club

Black mountain golf club a must for all golfers

Black Mountain Golf Club is situated in Hua Hin, Thailand. Being just a 30-minute drive from the centre of Hua Hin, it’s the perfect place to escape the city for a day and enjoy a fantastic round of golf.

The golf course at Black Mountain was designed by Phil Ryan and opened for play in 2007.

The land on which the course is based was previously a pineapple plantation and you know you are in a valley when you see the large granite mountains surrounding the course.

Black Mountain Golf Club has received several awards over the years, underlining the quality of the course and facilities available.

Best courses outside of the USA

In 2012, Black Mountain was chosen in the list of 100 best golf courses outside the USA by Golf Digest Magazine. Having hosted Asian PGA Tour events in 2009 and 2011, Black Mountain was chosen by the European Tour, to stage the Thailand Classic in 2014, which was the first European Tour event to be held in Thailand.

The success of the event persuaded the European Tour to keep the Thailand Open on its schedule at Black Mountain Golf Club and with a prize purse of some $2 million, it is easily the biggest prize fund of any tournament in Thailand.

Why is it so good?

So, what is it about Black Mountain which makes it such a popular place to play golf, for amateurs and professionals alike? Firstly, this is a golf course which is suitable for both top-level players and the average golfer. The holes give a choice of taking the safe route, which for the average player should be the way to go and a risky route, perhaps better suited to advanced and professional players. The fairways are great for players who are shorter off the tee, as they begin quite generously before becoming narrower the further along the hole they stretch.

For those who like to crunch the ball off the tee, accuracy is a must or you will find yourself off the fairway for your second shot.

The greens at Black Mountain Golf Club are large and this gives plenty of scope for changing the pin position.

Depending on the pin position on the day you are playing, you may find the greens tough, especially considering the numerous bunkers which protect them.

However, there are plenty of opportunities for low scoring if you can reach the greens without straying from the fairway.

The quality of the playing surfaces at Black Mountain is of the highest standard and you will thoroughly enjoy playing the course without having to worry about bad lies on the fairway or greens.

Holes that stand out

The pick of the holes includes the par-5 sixth, which can be reached in two by long hitters but also offers a great birdie chance to those playing the safer route, around the tree and the water. The peninsula green means you must be 100% confident in attacking the pin on your second shot or face seeing your ball splash into the water. A great example of the risk-reward options at Black Mountain Golf Club is the par-4 seventh hole.

This hole offers players the opportunity to hit their tee shot some 230 yards, over water, which leaves a nice wedge shot to the green.

If you are not feeling confident about hitting over water you can hit your shot around the water but may struggle to record a par by doing so.

The signature hole is the par-3 eleventh, which features an island green and very little margin for error.

Anything other than finding the green on this hole will see a drop to the left of the green and a chance to make a bogey at best.
