Why do you shoot inconsistent scores?

It’s the number one question I get asked and gets flooded into top golf website forums every day. "Why can’t I shoot more consistent golf scores … one week I shoot 85 and then the next it’s 97"! Sound familiar? The answer is very simple. When you start to play bad usually what happens is you begin to make changes in your swing in a desperate attempt to find the solution to your poor golf.

Unfortunately, all this does is make things worse because most often the issue with your golf swing happens before you swing a golf club.

Pre-swing is a big key to more consistent golf

Believe it or not, most golfers play inconsistent golf because of issues they might have pre-swing. For example, if you are not balanced correctly at set-up this will require one part of your body to make a compensation during your golf swing to counterbalance yourself. When that one part of your body starts making that compensation, the second part of the body needs to make compensations to make up for the first one.

It’s a never-ending cycle that results in multiple compensations which leads to poor, frustrating inconsistent golf.

So remember, start looking at your pre-swing first and you’ll eliminate all compensations and develop a consistent golf swing that leads to lower golf scores.

Another common reason for inconsistent golf is not sticking to a pre-shot routine or not having one at all. A pre-shot routine gets you in the ‘zone’ and ready to play the golf shot on your terms.

All golf professionals have these in their game and perform them religiously.

It’s often said that the difference between professional golfers and amateurs is not their golf swing or ability, but their lack of a good pre-shot routine.

Having a good pre-shot routine is vital if you want to shoot consistently, lower golf scores, and groove a consistent golf swing. A good pre-shot routine consists of a single or multiple set of internal or external movements that are unique to you that trigger an ‘I’m ready now’ response and ready to play the golf shot.

It could anything from making a slow practice swing, humming a song, counting to 3 … it doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that you find one that works for you and you stick to it no matter how good or bad you are playing.

Some top professionals like to waggle the clubhead to reduce tension in the wrists, a tug of their shirt, singing a song, or even picturing a mental image in their mind of how the golf shot is going to look.

Take the time to practice finding a good pre-shot routine that works for you.

It might take some time in finding it but the results will be worth it in the long run.

You probably already know the value of goals in sport, but the right goals are extremely powerful when it comes to golf. And I’m not talking about goals that are outcome-based such as I want to break 80 or 90 or hit 7 greens in regulation today. I’m talking about goals that you have 100% control over and can achieve every single round that contributes to better golf scores.

So what sort of goals am I talking about?

I'm talking about process goals which are extremely effective goals that any golfer can learn and implement into their own game.


Process goals can make you a golf scoring machine

If you haven’t heard of process goals and how they relate to golf then you are missing out on some very powerful techniques that can help you develop a consistent golf swing. Process goals are goals that you have under your control versus outcome goals that are not under your control.

A good example relating to golf would be having a process goal to perform a movement as a pre-shot routine before every golf shot you hit.

You might decide that you would like to make 3 slow and deliberate practice swings while visualizing the shot before every shot you make over 18 holes.

If you find you play better when you do this, you can make this a process goal to complete this for each shot over 18 holes.

This is an achievable goal that you have 100% control over every round and builds your confidence.
