3 SECRET MOVES I WISH I WAS SHOWN WHEN I FIRST PLAYED GOLF

10. The Simpsons

To get into the swing of things (because who doesn’t love a pun), let’s start with a classic ‘Doh!’ moment from everyone’s favourite yellow, donut-eating, beer-guzzling, all-American dad.

In this short but always entertaining clip, Homer tries his hand at impressing his boss with his golf skills – or, to be accurate, his lack thereof.

9. I Love You, Man (2003)

“I want to be more involved in your interests,” she said, “it’ll be fun,” she said. Whilst for some of us, introducing your other half to the beautiful game makes for an afternoon of light-hearted merriment and precious bonding time, for some of us it looks more like this.

Here, comedy kings Paul Rudd and Jason Segal depict an accurate representation of golfing with the wife (see clip 5 for more information).

8. Armageddon (1998)

In the opening scene for the highest-grossing film of 1998, Bruce Willis makes his feelings for Green Peace clear, by demonstrating his pretty impressive swing off his very own oil rig.

Which obviously comes complete with a mini green - doesn’t yours?

7. Animal House (1978)

In the spin-off from National Lampoon Magazine and, despite your cries of disbelief, one of the most profitable movies of all time, a bunch of misfits frat boys stick it to the college dean, who’s set on getting them expelled.

In this clip, pesky Delta boys, Otter and Boon, undertake some target practice in order to ‘defend’ one of their pledges.

6. Get Smart (2008)

Now for some driving range fun with the enthusiastic, but less than a slick secret agent,  Maxwell Smart (Steve Carrell) and his reluctant boss, The Chief (Alan Arkin).

In arguably one of the funniest golf moments in the movie, Smart and The Chief come under fire during a good ol’ fashion car chase, with the additions of a driving range and a swordfish.

5. Family Guy

As demonstrated back in clip number 9, the challenge of golfing with an inexperienced other half is no mean feat, and one that can result in extreme frustration and/or golf clubs being flung across the course in a fit of rage.

As a couple well versed in the stresses and strains of married life, Peter and Lois from Family Guy share an exchange which is a pretty precise depiction of how golfers and their significant others, respectively, feel about golf.

4. Falling Down (1993)

Michael Douglas has his finest hour in this 1993 black comedy crime-thriller. Whilst on a violent rampage across LA to get to his daughter’s birthday party on time (which may seem a little drastic to some), divorcee William Foster meets a pair of snooty, pastel-clad golfers, and decides to bring them down a peg or two, with the help of his massive shotgun of course.

This is a golf scene I'll never forget.

3. Tin Cup (1996)

Bringing us into the final three, we’ve got Tin Cup. Kevin Costner stars as Roy, a rebellious ex-pro-golfer, who dusts off his clubs in order to win the heart of his rival’s girlfriend and qualify for the US Open.

In the scene below, his good pal Romeo tries to get Roy’s head off women and back in the game with some helpful golfing tips, including wearing his hat backward and drinking copious amounts of spirits. Sound advice, I’m sure you’ll agree.

2. Happy Gilmore (1996)

You don’t have to be a golf fan to enjoy the much-loved Happy Gilmore. Once the overaggressive Happy (Adam Sandler) gets his dreams of being a pro hockey player crushed, he discovers a hidden talent for golf.

Whilst many of us enjoy a relaxing game of golf to unwind and relax, like Happy there, comes a time in any golfer’s life when getting on all fours and screaming at the ball seems like the only option.

However, after watching this clip we hope you’ll consider exercising a little more self-control.

1. Caddyshack (1980)

How could we not give the top spot to the hilariously bizarre golf classic, Caddyshack? Choosing just one clip has been a near-impossible task - from Bishop’s epic game in the storm, to Carl Spackler attacking a flower bed, to Ty Webb’s existential ponderings – but we got there eventually and it was Journey’s epic rendition of ‘Anyway You Want It’ that clinched it for this scene.

Without further ado, ‘let’s dance!’
