Golf Iron Set Up

Golf iron set up to hit pure iron shots

Ever wondered how the pros hit those clean, crisp iron shots to the greens? You probably can’t understand why your iron shots come off the toe or you thin them through the back of the greens … am I right? Maybe you think your set up is okay because one of your mates told you so, but for some reason, you are still not getting the results you want? Like most things in golf, it all starts with the set up. If your golf iron set up is not right you are harming your chances of hitting great iron shots right from the start.

The good news is getting the proper golf iron set up is not difficult. It's easy to learn and will take just seconds to implement.

A great golf iron set up puts you in a fantastic position to make a solid impact with the golf ball.

I learned how to do this by following the Perfect Impact System which shows you the secret to making a solid, crisp impact on all of your golf shots.

Examples of incorrect golf set up

Have a look at the image below and you'll see two typical incorrect ways golfers set up to the golf ball. The first image shows the golfer with a rounded back that is very typical for weekend golfers. The problem with this is when your back is rounded it makes it very difficult to get a proper and definitely not a full shoulder turn.

Stand up and try turning your shoulders with a rounded back ... it's very difficult to do!

With this shoulder turn, you can't get the power and fluidity in your golf swing to make consistent contact with the golf ball.

The second image shows how a golfer has tried to correct the rounded back by pushing their butt out too far.

What this causes is an 'S' shape to form in your back and puts a lot of unnecessary stress on your back muscles.

If you stand up and try out this position, you'll find after a while it puts a lot of stress on your lower back.

The perfect golf posture

Have a look at the image below and notice the difference compared to the previous two images. The back has formed a nice straight line from the butt all the way up to the top of the shoulder blades.

It's not putting any stress or undue pressure on the back muscles and you're in a great position to commence your golf swing.

Golf Posture

How wide are your shoulders?

You don’t need to measure them exactly but you do need to use them as a guide. Your feet should be approximately shoulder-width apart at address and not too wide or too narrow which affects your balance.

It's not a perfect distance, but enough to give you a great reference point of how far to move your feet.

This set up will give you greater stability and enables you to make a better shoulder from an athletic position at address.

Do you have Charlie Chaplin feet?

Don’t go overboard with this one but just keep the basic principle in mind. Your toes should be pointing out on a slight angle at address, perhaps around 70 degrees. This gives you a solid base to swing around and make a good turn in the golf swing.

Feet pointed straight ahead makes it more difficult for your shoulders and hips to rotate during the backswing.

Test it out for yourself and see what a difference it makes.

Importance of axis tilt at set up

Another key part of the golf iron set up is to ensure you have the correct amount of axis tilt in your upper body. Axis tilt is the amount of sideways movement your body moves when you're in the set up position at address.

As shown in the video, it's important you get the right amount of tilt away at set up so you can get into the right positions in the backswing.

Without any axis tilt, you risk putting yourself into difficult positions in the backswing and even start to reverse pivot which causes a multitude of bad shots.

An easy way to do this is to hold a golf club against your sternum or the centre of your chest.

Next, rock your shoulders slightly until the club reaches the inside of your lead thigh as shown in the image above.

This is a great checkpoint to let you know you've created the perfect amount of axis tilt at your address position.

The secret of the right elbow pit

A forgotten part of the golf iron set up is the position of the arms. In particular, the position of the right elbow pit (right-hander) is crucial to getting a proper golf swing takeaway leading to a solid, consistent golf swing. Where most golfers go wrong is they have the right elbow pit facing towards the target at set up.

This is incorrect.

When you do this, it forces the right elbow to bend back and pull the golf club behind your body.

It’s impossible for the club to go anywhere else because of the biomechanical function of the elbow.

Go ahead and test it out for yourself.

However, if you set up with the right elbow pit facing forward towards the golf ball. You are in the correct biomechanical position for the elbow to bend naturally and keep the golf club on plane to the top of the backswing.

Try it out and you’ll see if feels natural and the elbow will bend without trying in the normal sequence of the backswing.

Don’t forget your head position

The position your head is in at set up is commonly overlooked by most beginner and club golfers. It could be the difference between you hitting a solid iron or a thinned one over the back of the green. At set up the head should be pointing behind the golf ball at a slight angle away from the target.  (see image right at the top).

This puts your body in a great position to get behind the ball and make solid contact hitting down and through the ground.

If the head ever gets in front of the golf ball too early it forces you to hang back and try to scoop the golf ball leading to a lot of weaker, inconsistent golf shots.
